Wigs are a way to change your hairstyle frequently, without ruining the
integrity of your hair. There are many different kinds of wigs, and just like
weaves they come in either synthetic or human hair. A good wig made out of
human hair can cost you anywhere between $400 and $5000, depending on the type
of hair and who is creating it. There are rare synthetic wigs that are
well-made that you can find more under $100, but that requires you to do your
research. That being said, synthetic wigs usually only last a few months or
less if you are wearing them regularly. Human wigs on the other hand can be
used for a few years if maintained properly.
There are four types of wigs; ready-made, lace-front, full-lace and
custom. Ready-made wigs are just that! They are readily available at a local beauty
supply store as well as hair vendors. They have one-size fits all creations
that can be adjusted to the wearers head, and they are pre-styled, often synthetic,
and sold at a set price. The average price for them is $150, however they can
range from $20-$400. Lace front wigs are normally made from human hair, with a
closure (a hairpiece that looks like your natural scalp) sewn on the unit’s
crown that is only able to be parted one or two ways in the front. Tracks are
then sewn on the back of the unit from ear to ear. This can cost anywhere from
$100 to $500. Full-lace wigs are usually made with human hair and constructed
from a lace cap. It is a unit that has little tiny holes creating a ventilated
unit with versatility and allows you to part your hair in any direction.
Full-lace wigs provide you with multiple options such as ponytails or cornrows,
and the list goes on. To install them, you must braid one’s natural hair in
cornrows, usually straight back, apply some adhesive glue around the hairs
perimeter (being mindful to not get it into your own hair), and then put the
wig on and in place by bonding it to the glue and securing the wig with wig
clips. You could be paying $200-$5000 depending on the quality. Last but not
least, custom wigs. As in the name, custom wigs are human hair wigs made
specifically for one person, keeping in mind head circumference and style preferences.
Hair professionals create the custom wigs with a base first (usually from a
stocking or lace cap with a stretchy, premeasured band attached), that fits to
your head and then the hair of your choice is then sewn onto it. These can cost
more than $200.

When it comes to wig maintenance, they should be care for as how you
care or your own hair. Storing custom wigs on mannequin heads are a good way to
extend the hairs life. Also, when you are sleeping or lying down, wearing a
silk bonnet is good to ensure neatness and protection. Here are 4 more tips on
how to keep your wigs in tip top shape:
1)
Wash your
wig(s) with shampoo and conditioner that is sulfate-free
2)
Don’t wash
them too much as you can risk damaging
the hair and shortening its life span
3)
Do not use
heat on synthetic wigs
4)
Never us
heavy oils or styling creams
